Introduction to a Hopeful Future Doctor

A picture of my girlfriend and childhood best friend (left) and myself (right).

Hello everyone! My name is Chase Gaddis and I am a Biology/Pre-Medicine major from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, a large suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma. I have always been interested in trying to understand the way people function and interact with the world on a daily basis, so choosing biology as my major has been the plan since 7th grade, when I figured out what college was and all of that other important stuff. Definitely the coolest part about learning about biology is seeing the same types of processes and fundamental elements that are present in so many diverse types of life being applied across the board of existence. The best class that I've taken at OU was BIO 1134, which studies ecology and diversity of biological systems, which is exactly what I have always wanted to focus on! That class, and the very idea of understanding biological systems, really cemented my dream of trying to become a doctor. I have always felt like doctors are just mechanics for people, and that thought has always interested me! Aside from all of the boring scientific stuff, I am currently in Orlando, Florida. I will be at Disney World until Monday afternoon, and I am so pumped to be here. I love all things Disney, and going to the parks and riding the rides here just adds a whole other dimension to my love of Disney. My favorite movie I saw in 2018 was definitely Mary Poppins Returns, and I encourage all of you to see it. In my free time, I enjoy running (sometimes), playing soccer, and playing any Nintendo video games of any era. It would be rash of me to include a picture of my girlfriend and not mention her at all, so I will do that now. I met Lexi in my 5th grade class at Wolf Creek Elementary in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and I have liked ever for as long as I can remember! I finally got the courage to ask her out in 10th grade, and wouldn't you believe it, she said yes! We have almost been dating for 4 years at the time of typing this, and I hope there are more years to come! That's pretty much all there is to me, so if you have any burning questions, comment something below!

  1. Hey Chase,

It was great to read through your introduction blog post. I, too, am a biology major. It has been great so far. It is so cool that you are at Disney right now. I have never been, but I would love to someday. Good luck with your future biology classes. It is truly a great major. I hope you have an awesome semester!

    1. Hey Chase,

I must say I admire your courage taking all of those difficult science courses. I'm studying accounting, which is difficult in its own right, but I am not sure it is as tough as those. I will have to give Mary Poppins a watch.

Also, congrats to you and your lady on making it 4 years. I just got engaged to my fiance after about 5 years of dating. Hopefully it works out for you guys!

  3. Oh, that is so sweet about you and your girlfriend, Chase! What a lovely story! And I still haven't seen that Mary Poppins yet... but I really want to. I was born in the year of the original movie, so it was so cool to see Dick Van Dyke being able to appear in the remake, and still dancing! I read an article about him in the New York Times which was so inspiring: Dick Van Dyke on ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ and Dancing at 93. We should all be so lucky if/when our 93rd year rolls around!

  4. Hi Chase,
What a cute love story! I wish y'all the best. I'm really glad you are enjoying your biology courses-- I could never! Sounds like you're a great fit for med school, and good luck with the MCAT. I have not yet seen Mary Poppins Returns but now I want to watch it. I too enjoy nintendo games, and running (sometimes).

  5. Hi Chase,
I am also from the Tulsa area, Bartlesville. Your major and passion in the biology field sound really cool. I wish you luck in such difficult classes. I saw Mary Poppins Returns over the break and I really enjoyed it. I haven't actually seen the original but I know enough about it to follow the new one. I also like the name of your blog. Good luck in this course, I can't want to read some of your stories!

  6. Hi Chase,
Like everyone else has said, I love the story between you and your girlfriend. It is quite adorable! I am glad everything worked out for you guys! And... I have never seen any of the Mary Poppins movies, so I am putting that on my "Must Watch" now. Also, I am pre-med, too! It's nice to see how you decided to become a doctor. Maybe, I will figure out why I want to soon before I start applying! :) Can't wait to read more soon!

  7. Hey there Chase,
It is pretty awesome that you are a bio major. I am a mechanical engineering major and I totally understand what you are saying that you believe that Doctors are the mechanics of the human body That was pretty Insightful. I hope you have an awesome semester and I look forward to reading some of your future stories!

  8. Hey Chase,
I am actually from Claremore and have a bunch of friends from BA. I know its a big school so I doubt you know them but I am familiar with the area. If you actually played soccer in high school we probably played against each other at some point. I remember getting whooped from BA pretty much anytime that we played them. I also find it really cool that you're studying biology, I would love to study something like that, but I am not sure I have the mental capacity to do that (I know its a tough major). Hope you have a great rest of the semester!

  9. Hey Chase!
Welcome to the class. An interest in the biological processes being the reason one wants to be a doctor is pretty unique. But what a cool field that can explore an interest like that. Interesting note on the Mary Poppins- from the blog title I would swear it would have been Harry Potter!

  10. Hold on, THE Chase Gaddis is in my Mythology and Folklore class? No way!
I think it's very cool that you included a picture of Lexi in your intro. Lexi is practically the coolest person in the world, so including her in your introduction really spices it up. I hope that you enjoy your semester and good luck with you future in the medical field!

  11. Hi there Chase!

I really enjoyed reading your introduction! I'm so glad there are people like you who want to be doctors, because it's such an important job-- an important job that people like me would be terrible at. I hope you had fun in Orlando, Disney is the best! Good luck this semester, and I look forward to reading your stories.

  12. Hey Chase,

Man, no idea how you do what you do. I’m more fond of the social sciences myself, and I couldn’t imagine being a Biology major! Best of luck as you finish up here at OU and move into a career in the medical field. I’m sure it will be hard but so rewarding. I’m looking forward to what all you’ll write this summer!

    Best,
    - JD

  13. Hello, Chase!

Wow, I am super impressed with your choice of study and wish you well on becoming a doctor! Also, congratulations to you and Lexi on celebrating four years together! I love that you were childhood friends before dating--so sweet! I, too, love Disney World and cannot wait til I get to return. The last time I went was in 2014 for Christmas and it was just so magical! I went to Disneyland Paris a year ago and can honestly say it is not nearly as good as Disney World (both in terms of weather and attractions)!

Good luck on the rest of your semester and I look forward to reading what you write!

  14. Hi Chase!
It is so cute that you and your girlfriend have known each other almost your whole lives! That's crazy. I'm jealous you went to Disney World, I love it there. For my twenty-first birthday, my aunt actually gave me a trip to Disney World with her so we could drink around the world at Food and Wine! Good luck with the semester and I'm excited to see your writing!

  15. Hello, Chase!

I cannot believe that you were in Orlando, Florida when you wrote your introduction! I am so jealous! It is always nice to meet (if you could call this that) a fellow Disney fan! I am glad to hear that you really enjoyed the BIO 1134 class – I took the class myself and enjoyed it as well. Good luck on your future endeavors!

  16. Hi Chase,

That is pretty neat that you want to be a doctor one day! I considered it once in my life, but I decided I did not want to go to school for such a long time. I am sure you will be successful in what you decide to do as you seem to be motivated. I also agree with you that Mary Poppins Returns was a great movie!

  17. Hi Chase,

It is very nice to meet you I really enjoyed reading about how you decided your major. I am a professional writing major so sciences were definitely not my thing. I admire you for all the hard work that you do to be successful within your degree and I also admire how much you have a passion to become a doctor. Medical classes are not easy by any rate. I am a big fan of Disney myself and would love to go back to Disney World one day in the future. I really look forward to seeing more of your writing as the end of the semester comes closer.

  18. Chase,

It was a pleasure to read about you and seeing how your personality shined through your intro post. I once was a biology major…a long time ago. Since, I have switched to psychology (I too like learning how people interact with each other). You actually enjoyed 1134?! You might be of a different species. To each their own I suppose, and I guess Dr. Gibson was kinda cool.

Best of luck in the remainder of the course!

  19. Hi Chase,

It is so cool that you are planning on becoming a doctor. I was originally a Pre-Med major but changed and am pursuing a different career now. Either way, it is such a rewarding career. It's so cool to see that you were in Disney. I used to live in Florida and California and my family and I would visit Disney very often. Since moving to Dallas, we have been back quite a few times and are actually going to stay on Disney property in June. I also took BIOL 1134 but definitely did not enjoy it as much as you did. It's great to hear that you got so much out of that course. Good luck the rest of this semester!

  20. Hey Chase!

I read through your introduction a few weeks back but you popped up on the randomizer again so I figured I’d check in. I hope your semester is going well so far, it’s hard to believe we are getting this close to the end. I hope your courses wrap up well and that you have a great sumer!

    Best,
    -JD

  21. Chase, it was really great getting to know you some through your introduction post. I think it is so cool that we are able to interact even though we are in two separate classes (I'm in Indian Epics). I think it is cool that having an online class like this allows us to do that. Again, it was great getting to know you some and the best of luck to you on your future endeavors.

  22. Hi Chase!

I think biology is neat. Knowing the "how" and the "why" to so many different tracts of life and how they all interact seems like it would be fun to learn about. Unfortunately, I always ended up asking "what" in biology class, so I stuck to the humanities. Anyway, I wish you good luck with your studies.

  23. Hello Chase,

I liked the way framed your interest in biology and wanting to become a doctor. You make it sound fascinating! It's so cool that you visited Orlando. I went a couple of years ago and definitely enjoyed it. I hope you are having a great semester and good luck in the coming finals. I look forward to reading more of your stories.
